Mindanao Bone and Wood Borak Statue

Marvelous Bone and Wood Carving of Borak made by the Maranao Tribe in Lanao, Mindanao in the Southern Philippines. Please be patient while the pictures load; this is a very unusual piece.

I purchased this unusual item on my last trip to the Philippines. It is in very good condition. It is made from a dark wood and inlaid and accentuated with bone. The wings can be removed for easier and safer shipping. This piece is 10.50 inches high, 7.50 inches from front to back and 12 inches wide across his wings.
According to the Brewer Dictionary of Phrase and Fable " Borak or Al Borak (the lightning). The animal brought by Gabriel to carry Mahomet to the seventh heaven. It had the face of a man, but the cheeks of a horse; its eyes were like jacinths, but brilliant as the stars; it had the wings of an eagle, spoke with the voice of a man, and glittered all over with radiant light.
