Nicholas and Edward Fitzgerald, sons of a well-known Irish brewer, arrived in Australia in the 1850s and established the Castlemaine Brewery in Castlemaine, Victoria. The Castlemaine township was named after a small village in Ireland where a castle stood on the banks of the river Maine, hence the name Castlemaine. On Friday the 13th in the year 1878, the brewery produced its first product, called "Castlemaine XXX Sparkling Ale." This was followed a few years later by Castlemaine XXXX; the thinking was that this lighter German-style lager would be more palatable to the Queensland drinker. incidentally, the letter X was a standard symbol that indicated the strength of an alcoholic beverage: the more X's, the stronger the brew. Castlemaine XXXX was launched into the United Kingdom in 1984 and soon the advertising theme, "Australians wouldn't give a XXXX for anything else," rolled off the tongues of British drinkers. Today, this Australian brew is a national favourite and a "Top 10" standard lager brand. It's still brewed using the original Brisbane recipe with imported Golden Cluster and Pride of Ringwood hops, as well as the finest Australian yeast.
