Here is an excerpt from the book:
SHE SWEPT into the reception room of Miss English's Academy, her hazel eyes bright with anger, the rustle of her taffeta gown raised from a crisp whisper to a cry by the vigor of her movements. Looking neither to right nor left Jessie Benton stormed up to her father and said in a low voice:
"I won't stay in this school another day. I'm going home with you tonight!"
Without trying to rise, her father asked, "What has happened?"
"I had Harriet Williams elected May Queen. She's the prettiest girl in the school, and the best dancer. But at breakfast this morning Miss English announced that we had to have a different queen."
Thomas Benton gazed into his daughter's enormous eyes.
"I trust you accepted the decision philosophically?"
She threw back her head with a spirited gesture of denial.
"I jumped to my feet and cried, 'This decision is unjust and unfair. The first choice of Harriet was honestly made!'
"What happened then?"
"Miss English called me to the head of the dining room, put her hand on my forehead and said, 'Miss Jessie, you seem feverish. Please report to the. infirmary.'
Tom Benton chuckled at the mimicked severity of his daughter's voice.
"How was the hot senna tea?"
"Dreadful, thank you. They kept me in solitary all day. But I used the time to good advantage, planning a mutiny. On May Day all the girls will Complain of a headache, and we'll be sent to bed with senna tea.
