The twenty myth tales included in this volume were collected by the author in Kerry, Galway and Donegal in 1887. The author, an American, feared on his arrival in Ireland that many of the myths had disappeared but soon discovered the close relationship between the speaking of Gaelic and the myth.

Where the speaking of Gaelic had disappeared, so had the myths, and thus all the tales included in this volume were collected from Gaelic speakers.

The Irish are in many ways a conservative race, and because of this we find the tales better preserved than almost anywhere else in Europe. A notable characteristic of the Irish tale is its precision of names and places.

As the author states in his introduction, myths appeal to three classes of people. The first are attracted by the wonderful story and the way it is told, the second by the social data preserved, which can be used for comparison purposes, and for the third the amount of myth material contained is the important factor.

These differing interests, and many others, are catered for in this absorbing volume.
