Anchors Aweigh Verses by Midshipmen of the United States Navy compiled and edited by Trident Literary Society. Revised Edition. Hardbound. George Banta Publishing Company. 1944. 5 1/2 by 8 1/4 inches. 247 pages. Location: Shelf 101C

This book is in very good condition. There is some minor edge wear. There is some minor corner Bumping. There is a name written inside the front cover. The boards are very slightly warped. The binding is tight with no loose or missing pages. The endpapers are absolutely fabulous -- an aerial shot of the Naval Academy.

Here is an excerpt from the introduction:

THIS collection of poetry is the successor to previous volumes ANCHORS AWEIGH, published by the Trident Literary Society in 1924 and 1936. Many of the worthiest poems from the former books are reprinted here. The rest are selected from more recent issues of the "Trident Magazine," the "Log," and Shipmate." Pratically all were written -by Midshipmen or Naval Officers and represent their ideas and sensations gleaned from their varied experiences at the Naval Academy and with the Service all over the world. An effort has been made to include those poems which will most interest their readers and which will awaken pleasant memories and impressions, rather than to select them with a critical eye to their strictly literary merit. ,

In publishing this book, it is the aim of the Trident Society to make available to Midshipmen, Naval Officers and the friends of the U. S. Navy a collection of verse that may paint a fair picture of the life with which they are familiar. It is our hope that it may also serve the Larger purpose of fostering literary activity among the members of the Service and of adding to our store of naval literature.

The arrangement of the contents is intended to present in logical sequence a Navy man's first interest in the sea and the service, his four years at the Naval Academy and, finally, his career as an officer. Because many of the poems selected were not signed, the name and date of publication in which they first appeared has been given. If any selections not written by men of the Naval Academy have been included, except as noted, the error was unintentional and unavoidable. The greater part of them have been definitely traced; the remainder must rest upon a moral certainty for their authenticity.

The Trident Society wishes to acknowledge a debt of gratitude to E. M. Eller '25 in originating the publication of ANCHORS AWEIGH, to E. B. Dexter '28 for his direction of this work, and to H. R. England '27 of the Alumni Association for his helpful and willing assistance. We also wish to acknowledge the part played by G. Hunter '36 for his work on the 1936 edition and to express special thanks for his invaluable assistance and advice in the editing and compiling of this edition. To all members and organizations of the Trident Society for their help in compilation and make up, and to the art staff for the sketches, we express our sincere thanks for their work and efforts which have made the publication of this edition of ANCHORS AWEIGH possible.
