Here is an excerpt from the preface:
The purpose of this book is to provide the general non-technical college student living and working in a scientifically complex age some means of learning about the nature, significance and use of mathematics from early times to the present. It is particularly prepared for those who
1. Ended their formal study of mathematics in grade nine, or shortly thereafter, and who now seek more advanced work to provide a wider mathematical horizon.
2. Studied the conventional type of mathematics courses without satisfying themselves with respect to knowledge about the nature and human significance of mathematics.
3. Regard themselves as non-specialists in mathematics, yet feel their basic work demands that they become more keenly aware of the mathematical aspects of their environment and that they understand to a fuller degree the useful techniques of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
4. Seek strengthened confidence to deal successfully with mathematical problems and who wish to prepare themselves historically, factually, and through practice to tackle with understanding and meaning richer or more advanced mathematical programs.
5. Are specially interested in the practical applications of mathematics.
The materials have been chosen and presented in such a way as to give the student a clear idea of the part played by mathematics in the historical development of our civilization. At the same time numerous exercises are presented which in addition to telling the story of elementary mathematics will furnish a comprehensive and vigorous review of fundamental concepts and processes in a distinctly new setting. The philosophy underlying the fundamental processes is kept constantly in mind, so that the work always may be meaningful and less mechanical.
The subject-matter content comprises many of the most important and practical topics of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, couched in a historical setting.
