Here is an excerpt from the preface:
The purpose of this handbook is to provide a complete and flexible text which will serve both reference and teaching purposes. To this end, it gives full attention to rhetoric, language, literature, criticism, and composition. The ever-expanding nature of English studies makes it increasingly difficult to keep up with both past and current developments. Thus, this book attempts to assemble in one place a variety of background information for the study of English and to explain with a completeness that is adequate for most general purposes.
In order to achieve this comprehensiveness, certain arbitrary decisions have been made about space. For example, all study aids for the instructor and student have been included in a separate manual. As a result, the book is more flexible for those who prefer not to use them; for those who do, they are easily available. The study aids are keyed to the text and suggest the kinds of projects that students can undertake to reach their own conclusions concerning the qualities that produce good writers and good writing.
