Here is an excerpt from the book:

Bill nodded. Mr. Webber must think he was mentally retarded, to believe that story. It was easy to think so, with this impediment.

Webber said, "'As to the checking up-it's being done. The man at the door-Harry Bosco, be's one of my top assistants-called British security as soon as I took you all in to meet Mr. Tellefsen. And the FBI about you. And Paris about de Guise. I may not be the nicest guy in the world, but then I don't often finish last, either."

VK came out of the bathroom in pajamas and robe. He raised his voice. "Anne, damn it, you've left your lipstick on my dressing table again. They'll think we indulge in incest."

"More likely that I'M not your sister," she said, coming through the connecting door from her bedroom. She was wearing a white batiste night dress embroidered with blue flowers, and carrying a long-handled silver hairbrush. She brushed up his hair the wrong way and said, "Your mirror has a better light than mine. What a day! The most exciting of my life."'

VK said, "Messy, I'd call it. Violence in a city seems so ... squalid. Well, we're leaving tomorrow. just as well."

"Is it very expensive here?"

He nodded. "I'm not complaining. You know we decided to have a real blowout before disappearing into the crowd . . . but the time has come to confine ourselves to dry bread and water."

"After Gobbair," she said. "I'm looking forward terribly to seeing it, after hearing you talk about it for thirteen years. The great castle in the mountains The purple heather Beautiful men with kilts! Do you think Sir Alan will fall madly in love with me and ask me to marry him?"

"Over my dead body," VK said grimly.

"Why, VK, I thought you liked him. He's your friend."

VK cut in. "I do like him, very much. He is my friend. The closest I have, probably. But he's a born bachelor. Any woman who married him would go stark raving bonkers within a year. "
