Here is an excerpt from the introduction:

This book is directed toward providing the average serious amateur craftsman with the means of making fine furniture that is within his ability. Nearly every beginner is surprised to find his doubts as to his ability to be groundless. Amateurs with a serious purpose but little experience will find here sympathetic understanding, and guidance that will help them steer clear of many pitfalls and mistakes. By following the directions, they can count on a measure of success that will amply reward them for the time spent. In addition the mental relaxation provided by creative manual effort is often an end in itself .

Successive photographs show in minute detail how a subject piece should look as the construction progresses. The photographs are grouped with the pertinent text and provide a step-by-step supplement to the text. In addition, each chapter has lists of materials, detailed drawings showing ensions, and covers special problems that may be encountered in the project in hand. Pattern outlines, where required, are superimposed on scaled squares to simplify the transfer of designs. Instructions cover thoroughly design and structural problems on everything but the most elemental woodworking procedures.

The projects have been selected for practical appeal in present-day homes. The basic designs are structurally sound and feature various forms of carving to emphasize this specialized field. The combination of classic forms in carving with proper guidance in traditional joinery insures finished products that will have both form and substance. From start to finish of a piece of furniture, every conceivable problem is anticipated, explained, and shown, fulfilling the reader's desire for a selfcontained book of furniture construction practices.

Numerous home shops are equipped only with basic machines. Therefore the photographs will show how many operations encountered in the course of construction can be accomplished with hand tools. Machine tools are indispensable for certain classes of work; but the projects set forth in "Fine Furniture" are so personalized that emphasis is placed more on hand tools. Also it should be remembered that the pinnacle of wood craftsmanship was attained before the advent of power-driven machine tools. Therefore, except for turned pieces, anyone with a modestly equipped workshop may start on any subject piece with full confidence of success.
